MODESTO – Police credit an alert citizen in the apprehension of a burglar Monday afternoon.
Officials say 27 year old David Luque was spotted in a backyard of a home and was later followed by a neighbor. Luque was leaving the area on a bicycle with the neighbor close behind. He was followed to the 2000 block of Scenic Drive where he entered another backyard.
A police officer quickly responded and located Luque on the porch of a home. The officer gave him commands to surrender. Officers say Luque cooperated at first, but then fled on foot toward Dry Creek. He was quickly apprehended by the officer and the citizen.
Police say the homeowner of the Scenic residence found damage to his home where the suspect tried to make entry. No property was found missing from either residence.
The officers involved in this incident commend the observant neighbors who knew that the suspect did not belong in their neighborhood and called the police. Their familiarity with neighbors, being a good witness and the willingness to assist is why the suspect was captured.
Luque was arrested on charges including prowling, resisting arrest, attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools and a burglary warrant.
